The Risks of a Ladybird Infestation

Although ladybirds do not carry human diseases or destroy the structural timber of your property, a large-scale indoor infestation presents distinct risks and nuisances:

• Property Staining: When stressed or disturbed, ladybirds secrete a foul-smelling yellow fluid from their leg joints, known as "reflex bleeding". This fluid causes stubborn, bright orange stains on walls, curtains, carpets, and upholstered furniture.

• Nuisance Bites: Invasive Harlequin ladybirds are more aggressive than native UK species and can bite humans if handled or trapped against skin. While the bites do not spread disease, they cause mild skin irritation.

• Allergic Reactions: In enclosed indoor environments, large accumulations of ladybird dust, shed skins, and droppings can trigger respiratory allergies or asthma-like symptoms in sensitive individuals.

• Ecological Threat: Harlequin ladybirds directly out-compete and prey upon our native UK ladybird larvae and eggs, severely threatening local biodiversity.
