Moles
The European mole (Talpa europaea) is the only mole species found in England. While they are a native part of the British ecosystem, their tunneling habits conflict with human land use, causing them to be classified as significant agricultural and gardening pests.
Why Moles Are Classified as Pests in England
Agricultural Damage: Mined soil mixes with grass during harvesting, which spoils silage crops. This contaminated feed can harbor bacteria like Listeria, which causes fatal illnesses in sheep and cattle.
Equipment and Livestock Hazards: Stone-filled molehills easily blunt and damage expensive farm machinery, such as grass mowers and balers. Additionally, hidden surface tunnels can collapse under the weight of livestock, causing leg injuries to horses and cattle.
Aesthetic and Property Damage: In domestic gardens, golf courses, and manicured sports pitches, molehills completely destroy uniform lawns. Their shallow foraging tunnels also dislodge the roots of young plants and vegetables, causing them to wither and die.
Weed Invasion: The freshly turned earth of a molehill creates a perfect, weed-free seedbed. This allows invasive weeds like docks and thistles to quickly take root and spread across pristine lawns and managed pastures.
Why Moles Are Hard to Get Rid Of:
Hidden Lifestyle: Moles spend 99% of their lives deep underground, making them invisible and safely insulated from surface-level threats.
Massive Networks: Their vast tunnel systems span multiple properties, allowing moles to easily abandon blocked areas and retreat to deeper highways.
Hyper-Sensitive: Exceptional senses of smell and touch let them detect human scent on traps, causing them to dig detours around danger.
Immune to Repellents: Flooding or vibrating spikes fail long-term; moles simply seal off the disturbed section until the threat passes.
Instant Reoccupation: Vacated tunnels leave a perfect underground highway that neighboring moles will quickly move into and reclaim.
